Hang Glider
Principle
Hang
gliders seek out rising air masses (lift) from the following sources:
Thermals: The most commonly used source of lift is created by the sun's
energy heating the ground which in turn heats the air above it. This warm
air rises in columns known as thermals.
Ridge Rift: Another form of lift occurs when the wind meets a mountain,
cliff or hill. The air is deflected up the windward face of the mountain
forming lift.
Possible experimentations:
Size of the kite, Material used for making the kite,
length of the thread, Weight attached
Items Required to make:
1. Kite
2. Thread
3. Empty Film Roll Bottle
4. Stones / Sand
Fun Facts to know:
Hang gliding is a popular sport abroad. Glider pilots can stay airborne
for hours.
Match Stick Models
Activity:
Making various 2 and
3 dimensional shapes and noting their number of vertices, edges, surfaces
and also identifying their properties.
Few things which can
be learnt:
Triangle is the most
rigid 2 dimensional shape
Properties of angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, triangular prisms, cuboids,
etc.
Items
Required to make:
Match Sticks
Cycle valve tube 2 cm pieces to be used as connectors
Thorn or Big Needle
Fun Facts to know:
One can make the model of Buckminster fullerene using these
match sticks and connectors.
